Map of the Empire

Fon Millikin and Fon Alad
Most of the "places" on Fon Millikin and Fon Alad are, of course, nothing more than "harvesting villages." A harvesting village is a set of wooden buildings that serve as barracks for the harvesters when they harvest the Sickle Root. Each barracks can sleep a full score of people, and the villages have between fifteen and twenty barracks each. Not every bed is full, in fact few are, but there is capacity for more gatherers in case weather requires a brief harvest. (Recall that the Mar Fly slumbers during the hot season, so if a cold-front causes the hot season to end while harvesters are still working, disaster is likely.)

The Local Harvest Director does not get special accommodations, although he does have the benefit of an entire "administrative" building. This building contains a desk and a chair, and the desk tends to have previous years' harvest log as well as a calendar and a local map, as well as such a thing may be made for a large field of plants. Beyond these buildings, there is a designated toilet room. Like any other building, the floor is just dirt, but this mobile structure has a pair of shovels for hole-digging and covering. Also present in the village is a kitchen. Although most of the food preparation is done outside by the night-time campfire, the dishes must be stored during the non-harvest season, thus the kitchen. Each non-coastal village has, in addition to the aforementioned, a granary of sorts to contain the harvested Sickle Root.

The harvest takes place in a very ordered fashion. The manual labourers of the lower caste do all of the work including the administration of the harvest, except at the highest level. The harvest is directed by one Harvest Director who is a member of the upper class. Below the Harvest Director are the local harvest directors, each of whom receive the duty of one locale of Sickle Root to harvest, locale defined as the area closest to their designated harvesting village. These directors each decide how many workers they need, and they pick them out of the volunteers assembled on Open Harvest Day. Typically, each local harvest director will pick about two hundred people, based on the size of their region. An LHD concerned more with morale and less with morals is likely to add a couple of prostitutes to their lot. During the harvest, however, the workers shift between villages. This way, many prolonged conflicts are avoided, and the people working at the inland villages get to bathe after their inland stint. Fon is a happy member of the Merchant's League. The Merchant's League is able to regulate the sale of Sickle Root as well as co-ordinate the large amounts of imports that Fon requires. Fon is not, however, controlled by the Merchant's League at any level. Some members of the Merchant's League are also citizens of Fon, but few members of Fon's government are loyal to the Merchant League. The League is seen as a great resource to the Empire of Fon, nothing more. Sickle Root is one of the Merchant League's many commodities that have very high mark ups, so Fon is a valued customer of the Merchant League.
